For the month of October, Isadore Gallery will display watercolor paintings by Denny Bond and ceramic art and jewelry by Klara Borbas.

Denny Bond is a nationally recognized watercolorist and illustrator who resides in Lancaster. Although his paintings appear very realistic, their artful compositions and playful use of shadow and light are unique. Bond makes his living doing illustrations for book publishers and ad agencies, but the work exhibited at Isadore Gallery he does for himself. “My illustrative approach tends to overlap into these paintings which are mainly story-based.” “Whether it be figurative, still life, or landscape, my selective subject must retain a high level of interest from the viewer…myself included.”

All of the paintings are created with permanent liquid watercolors with the use of masking fluid for areas to create texture, and capture white light. The watercolors are then layered several times to achieve the desirable color and all surface edges are softened many times to produce the effect of photo realism, viewed either from a distance or close up.

Denny Bond’s recent awards include: First Place, Works on Paper, Art of the State, Harrisburg (2010), First Place, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society Members Show (2008), and First Place, National Watercolor USA (2007). His art was featured in American Artist Magazine (June 2007), Watercolor Artist Magazine (February 2008), and Artist’s Magazine (2009).

Klara Borbas started out as a potter, turned to wood sculpting and was drawn back to clay since moving to the US from Budapest. She has developed a style built on contrasts: black and white, hard and soft, shiny and matte. Since Borbas was educated under the wings of classical European art, her work is inspired by architecture and sculpture. “My ceramics are distinguished by simplicity, harmony and grace of form."

Her wheel-thrown vases are elegant shapes that she textures through delicate lines and carvings. Transferring the wavy lines from her vases and using underglazes as if they were watercolors, she paints “landscapes” and geometric patterns on her plates. Her lightweight porcelain jewelry combines all of these elements: handpainted scenes and sculpted beads are joined with wooden beads from rare woods such as ebony.

Borbas now lives in Pennsylvania. She is exhibiting her work at the nation’s major juried craft events, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, the Smithsonian Craft Show, Buyer’s Market of America, the American Craft Council/Baltimore Show and Artrider/New York City.

Paintings by Denny Bond and Ceramic Art by Klara Borbas will be at Isadore Gallery in Lancaster, 228 N. Prince Street, from September 30 through October 30. The artists will be present at the First Friday reception on October 1 from 5 to 9 PM and during Lancaster ArtWalk on October 2 and 3.
