Coffee drinkers and art patrons can share their interests in the October show at Isadore Gallery, 228 N. Prince Street in Lancaster. From October 1 through 31, Isadore Gallery is hosting a juried/invitational exhibition that explores “the cup”.
More than 30 artists from around the country submitted three entries of their cup designs. An additional list of nationally known ceramic artists was invited to send entries. The exciting display ranges from classical Japanese bowls presented during tea ceremonies to offbeat sculptural interpretations of the drinking vessel.
Regis Brodie has selected his favorites based on creativity, skill and design. Brodie is an internationally recognized ceramic artist and a teacher at Skidmore College. His work is represented in permanent collections such as the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation, the National Ceramics Museum in Barcelona, Spain, the National Ceramics Museum in Sevre, France, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Hyde Collection. Several of Brodie’s tea bowls will be included in the show.
This exhibition is an opportunity for Isadore Gallery to offer work that is both useful and affordable and to showcase some influential contemporary ceramic artists. Suzanne Wolfe has been a professor of ceramics at the University of Hawaii for over 35 years whose works are included in museums in the United States, Japan, China and Taiwan. Her cups pair text and images as a means of referencing women’s concerns and issues. Keith Ekstam is a professor at Southwest Missouri State University whose ceramic art incorporates imagery that makes reference to a diverse range of objects including children’s toys, weapons, architectural elements, geology, and everyday items. The design and function of works by Yoshi Fujii are influenced by the artist’s Japanese heritage. She says: “It is my humble desire to share the luxury and beauty of this culture on your dinner table.”
The exhibit will also feature new graphite drawings of still life compositions by local artist Jeff Geib.
Isadore Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays 10-6, Saturdays 10-5, and by appointment call 717-299-0127. First Friday Reception is October 2 from 5-9. Please join us for this show during Artwalk, October 17 and 18.
