Sometimes the boundaries blur between two and three dimensional art, as evident in the exhibit this month at Isadore Gallery entitled “Layers in Paint and Clay”, featuring paintings by Sandra Miller and ceramic sculptures by Tony Martin.

Sandra Miller starts with a flat picture plane. She then builds a collage with irregular pieces of paper and continues to layer her surface, adding textured materials like sawdust and sand to her medium as she paints. Miller’s goal is to create an ancient and yet timeless environment. She writes: ”The spirit of life possesses me; I see the sun as an ever-present image in my life: Shades of yellow abound. There is a well deep within where rivers flow; My garden fantasy continues to grow into works of art; Colors speak to me of life eternal; For these, and for the love of life, I live.”

Miller received her Bachelor’s degree in Art from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (cum laude) and her Masters in Fine Arts from Vermont College of Norwich University.

Her work can be found in the permanent collections of The Hyde Collection, Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, The Four Winds, and numerous private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe.

Tony Martin is a ceramic artist that creates functional pieces that are also figurative sculptures. He borrows anatomical parts of animals and plants to create his own fantastic creatures. His pitcher has a head that resembles a flower calyx and feet that look like paws. His cup has a spout like an elephant’s trunk and a shaggy body of another animal species. Like Miller, he builds textures and colors to complete the work. Tony Martin lives by the adage “find something you love to do and you will never work a day in your life”. It is obvious from these pieces that he has fun while he works.

Tony Martin is a ceramics professor at Idaho State University. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and his MFA from Illinois State University. His work has appeared in Ceramics Monthly and 500 Cups and has won Best in Show at Eagle Rock Museum Contemporary Craft exhibit and the purchase award at several exhibitions.

Paintings by Sandra Miller and Ceramic Sculptures by Tony Martin will be on display at Isadore Gallery, 228 N. Prince Street. October 4-27. First Friday Reception is October 5, 5-9 PM. Visit Isadore Gallery during Lancaster Art Walk, October 6 and 7.
