Mihail Tomescu:
Aeolian Strings - Mixed Media Paintings
November 1 - December 1, 2007
"First Friday" Reception November 2nd, 5-9PM
Mihail Tomescu hopes that the lines and colors of his art will resonate with life long after the paint has dried, just like the music magically played by the wind on an Aeolian harp.
He wants his figures to dance with life and convey the communality of the human experience from the past and world today.
Within the limits of two-dimensional paintings, he creates depth and space to express the passage of time. “I hope everyone can discover a story in my art”, like chapters in a book. "I am trying to give a modern translation to the basic elements of wind, fire, water, earth, life, and decay. " He uses literal references from ancient times in a quest for eternal truths but creates his own mythology based on contemporary experience.
Tomescu is deeply inspired by the old masters and experiences a dialogue with them every time he visits a museum. He is inspired by Giacometti’s haunting vertical and textured depictions of the human body, which have come to represent the complexity of the human condition. Goya and his colors that are both deep and pure at the same time also influence him. In his painting “Eol”: “I wanted to turn that shell into the chromatic scheme that Goya used”. And in keeping with his own fascination with Aeolian strings, “I wanted the central figure to generate not only air and sound, but energy, as he blows through the shell.”
Tomescu was born in Romania and feels lucky to have lived through the transition period from communism to democracy. “My life experience as a teenager was split in two dimensions, one as a student under the communist regime, and one trying to find myself after the revolution.” Tomescu started taking free art classes while studying engineering and discovered a potential so strong that he had to concentrate all his efforts into it. He was one of a few students accepted in a highly competitive 6-year art program in Romania. His work can be found in the Contemporary Artists Collection of the Romanian Parliament and in personal collections in The Netherlands, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Canada and the United States. While his wife pursued studies in the U.S., Tomescu enrolled at Penn State University and received his MFA degree.
Aeolian Strings is Tomescu’s second show at Isadore Gallery at 228 N. Prince St. in Lancaster. It will be on display November 1 through December 1. Gallery Hours are Thursdays 10-6, Fridays, 10-6, Saturdays 10-5, and by appointment call 299-0127.
