Presenting

National Juried/Invitational Cup Show

National Juried/Invitational
Cup Show
June 1 - June 30, 2007
"First Friday" Reception June 1st, 5-9PM

Coffee Drinkers and art patrons can share their interests in the June show at Isadore Gallery. From May 31 to June 30, Isadore Gallery is hosting a juried/invitational exhibition that explores “The Cup”. More than 60 artists from around the country submitted up to three entries of their designs. An additional list of nationally known ceramic artists was invited to participate. The exciting display of over 75 cups ranges from classical Japanese teacups presented during tea ceremonies to offbeat contemporary interpretations of the drinking vessel.

The cup is an intimate part of every-day life used to enjoy anything from morning coffee to evening cognac. The creation of a good cup requires skill, ergonomic design and creativity. One can eulogize the way a cup fits the hand and the lips enjoy the rim. The Japanese reverentially contemplate their tea bowls. We all can enjoy the way a cup that is made by hand feels in our own hand.

Included in the show is a cup by Eric Rempe who grew up in Lancaster, PA. The rich soil of this farm-based community gave him a connection to the earth and inspired him to work in clay. “We live in an age where machines have replaced many of the handmade objects which previously added richness to our lives.” “Making strong functional pieces that become a part of someone’s life is an underlying motivation in my work.”

Indiana artist Frank Pishkur has won awards and been featured in over 50 shows including 11 solo exhibitions. His current work is concerned with creating a functional ceramic form while using the clay body as a drawing surface. “For the last several years vessels have comprised the main focus of my creative energies. I usually work in series of similar forms, adjusting the shapes and decorations for each one. This allows me to better resolve visual issues that develop between the forms and their decoration.”

Tammy Marinazzi’s fanciful figurative cups are “utilitarian amenities that people use on a daily basis…. The work brings self-awareness directly to the table. They can be read as heavy both in weight and emotion, a metaphor for human interaction: One can fill a cup or render it empty."

Deborah Sigel, Associate Professor of Ceramics at Millersville University selected those to be included in the exhibition. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BA from Carleton College. She was awarded an NCECA International residency in Denmark, received a McKnight residency, and has recently returned from a residency at Taiwan University. She exhibits her work internationally and has been included in a number of publications in the field of ceramics.

This exhibition is an opportunity for Isadore Gallery to showcase some of the country’s most influential contemporary ceramic artists, and to offer work that is both useful and affordable.

This exhibit will also feature colored ink drawings by Miles Halpern.
