Collin Asmus: Contemporary Realism
July 5 - July 28, 2007
"First Friday" Reception June 6th, 5-9PM
Art and technology meet in the paintings and drawings of Collin Asmus on display July 5-28 at Isadore Gallery in Lancaster. Asmus creates works of art using images from public web cameras around the world. His paintings give us a peep at people enjoying everyday life. We visit the interior of Café Einstein, a great place for coffee and strudel in Vienna. We see worshippers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. We view some of the beautiful people sunning at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel. We observe shoppers at a mall in Korea and men relaxing in barber chairs in Tokyo. In most cases, the people have no idea they are being observed by others via the internet, let alone having their images painted and preserved.
Asmus’ technique references current web cam technology with its varying resolutions and pixellations. In his portraits done from live Internet chat rooms, he includes information the “sitter” writes to accompany their image.
Asmus has found a new way to approach classical subject matter such as portraiture and genre scenes. “I am fascinated by the way traditional oil painting can be used to reflect contemporary society and technology, and to raise questions regarding privacy and how modern technology is affecting our lives.”
Collin Asmus is an Associate Professor of Art at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibits. He has won awards at the Meridian Museum of Art (1st place Annual People’s Choice), the George Ohr Arts Center, the Masur Museum of Art, Birmingham-Southern College, Arkansas Art Center Irene Rosenweig Exhibition (for which he won Best of Show), and the Mississippi Invitational (MS Museum of Art, Jackson). Asmus received an ACS technology grant to develop interactive web material for use in teaching studio art courses.
Collin Asmus, Contemporary Realism will be on exhibit at Isadore Gallery, 228 N. Prince Street from July 5 through 28. An opening reception will be held First Friday, July 6, 5-9 PM. Normal gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays 10-6, Saturdays 10-5, and by appointment (call 717-299-0127).
