Two colorful artists are featured in a show August 2-25 at Isadore Gallery, 228 N. Prince Street in Lancaster, PA.
John Cleary has been a critically acclaimed artist for many years, actively teaching since 1975. He is Professor Emeritus of Painting and Drawing at Salisbury State University in Maryland. Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts recently awarded him a Regional Fellowship in painting. He has also placed highly in numerous juried shows on the eastern seaboard.
John Cleary combines linear and gestural brushstrokes resulting in paintings with both structure and movement. He organizes his pieces with lines and grids that invoke images of maps and architectural plans. The audience is guided through the composition by brace-like structures. Cleary layers the paint, at times building up color and at other times leaving the raw surface exposed. His latest display at Isadore Gallery is a unique blend of oil, acrylics, pastels and watercolors.
Daniel Arnold received his Master of Fine Arts degree at Penn State University last year. He recently won the First Place National Prize at the Impact Gallery and the First Place Award in Painting at the Buffalo State University Group Show.
Like Cleary, Arnold also works in the visual language of abstract expressionism, employing bold use of color, brush stroke and line variation. However, the human figure acts as an important tool to communicate his ideas. His images range from pure abstraction to representation.
Arnold tries to capture that brief moment between wakefulness and dreams. “I believe our dreams are a confrontation with our anxieties and fears, making them a vehicle toward finding inner peace.” Arnold’s paintings capture poignant events, often centering on an important philosophical dilemma. The image is rendered in an ambiguous way, leaving the interpretation of the event in the hands of the viewer. Arnold uses combinations of mediums for his pieces including paint, collage, charcoal and pastels.
Isadore Gallery hours are Thursdays 10-6, Fridays 10-6, Saturdays 10-5 and by appointment call 299-0127. First Friday reception will be held Friday, August 3, 5-9 PM.
